Keyword density tuning, exact-match anchor text, footer link blocks, doorway pages targeting variant queries. Many of those patterns still produce ranking gains in narrow contexts.

The catch is that AI systems evaluate content very differently, and the same tactics that move a Google needle are flags that pull AI trust scores in the wrong direction. Most realtors do not see this happening. They check rankings, see the page sitting in position four, and assume the SEO is working. Meanwhile the same page is being passed over by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s own AI Overviews when those systems answer local market questions. The signals AI weights are roughly the inverse of most over-optimization tactics. A named author with a verifiable identity. First-hand observation tied to a specific market. Body content that reads as analysis rather than keyword scaffolding. Internal linking that makes editorial sense rather than following a topical density formula. A consistent voice across the archive that suggests one expert writing rather than a team of contractors hitting briefs.

Here is where the gap shows up cleanly. A realtor who has spent three years writing monthly market commentary under their own name, with first-hand observations from the showings they did that month, builds AI citation authority steadily, even if their pages do not rank in the top three for high-volume terms. How to Recognize Over-Optimization in Existing Content
